Is everything at Jalan-Jalan made from teak? Yes.
All of the antique furniture and
architectural components we represent were constructed in the late 1800's
and early 1900's from original old growth Indonesian rain forest teak,
sustainably harvested for personal use by local artisans. What makes teak wood so special? Teak (Tectona Grandis) is native to Myanmar (Burma) and Southeast Asia. It has medium to hard density, is strong, has a decorative grain which polishes beautifully and has a warm yellow-brown color. Due to its natural oils (technoquine) teak is prized for repelling marine borers, termites and other insects and its resistance to water and rot. Teak is commonly used in cabinets, furniture and boats, it can withstand any climate, from the oil fields of Saudi Arabia to the harshest North American winters teak does not require a special finish to stay strong. |
